The Highlight Series- Dressing Tips for Her

Just thinking about getting yourself all dressed up to be photographed is both exciting and exhausting. There is so much to do and you want to make sure you look your best! All of us women and moms out there can relate to the struggle of planning outfits, finding something that looks good great on ourselves, and then doing our hair and makeup. It never fails that when we have some place to be and have to be dressed up, I spend almost all my time getting my two girls ready and then helping my husband too! When I finally have time to get myself done up we are racing the clock and I never feel like I gave myself the time to get ready that I gave everyone else! Once I sat down and worked out a style guide for my clients and then used it on myself everything got so much easier!! I am going to give you guys some of the tips that I give my clients and now use for myself when it comes to getting myself ready for portraits.

Don’t be afraid to dress up! There is no such thing as dressing up too much for your portrait session. If you have always been drawn to beautiful flowing dresses and flower crowns, or a formal sparkling dress with those perfect heals? Now is the time to do it! If you don’t feel like buying something for a one time event then you could take advantage of places like Rent The Runway to rent your outfit.

When in doubt, choose a dress! Not only does a dress instantly take your look to the net level but both dresses and skirts always flatter the female figure. When picking the length of your dress or skirts, it’s also a good idea to think about whether there will be little children in your photos. If you have smaller children, you will probably be sitting on the ground or down on their level interacting with them. Shorter cocktail dresses are also beautiful, but with kids in your pictures, having a longer dress or skirt will make moving around during your session easer and will still look beautiful. If you are expecting, I recommend floor-length gowns or maxi dresses. These types of dresses wrap around your belly and show off your beautiful  bump!

Choosing Colors. This has to be one of the MOST asked questions I get when planning for a session. Depending on what season you are having your session in and the environment you are doing your session in can determine the best colors for you and your family to wear to your session. Don’t be afraid to ask your photographer for color palate suggestions that will work well for you! A good rule of thumb is to always avoid match outfits and go for coordinating colors. Softer pastel colors look amazing in the desert and pops of color are a great addition to an urban environment!

These are just a few tips to help you dress your best for your photography session. Check back in weekly for more amazing tips in my highlight series to help you when preparing for your session!
